Life in Bowling Green and the surrounding Southcentral Kentucky region is full of activity, whether it’s kids playing at the park, a weekend spent hiking at Mammoth Cave and Hospital Hill, or tackling yard work at home. With all that action, cuts and scrapes are bound to happen.

Most minor cuts and scrapes are easy to treat on your own, but deeper wounds or those in sensitive areas may require medical attention to heal properly. At Med Center Health Emergency + UrgentCare, we’re here to guide you in choosing the right care, exactly when you need it.

WHEN YOU CAN TREAT A CUT OR SCRAPE AT HOME

Not every nick or cut needs medical attention. In many cases, basic first aid at home is enough, especially if the cut is shallow with smooth edges, the bleeding stops after applying direct pressure for a few minutes, or if there is no dirt, debris, or foreign objects in the wound.

For these minor injuries, follow these steps:

  1. Clean the wound thoroughly with soap and water.
  2. Apply an antibiotic ointment to prevent infection.
  3. Cover it with a clean bandage.

Keep an eye on the wound for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or pus. If you notice any of these, it’s time to seek care.

WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION FOR A CUT OR SCRAPE

Some injuries go beyond what you can safely treat at home. If a wound is deep, won’t stop bleeding after sustained pressure, or sits in a sensitive area like the face, hands, or over a joint, it’s worth getting medical attention. The same goes for bites, injuries involving dirty or rusty objects, or anything causing numbness, limited movement, or visible tissue beneath the skin.

Getting it evaluated early can lower the risk of infection, minimize scarring, and help it heal the way it should.
